What am I looking at?
I am rather biased about Giudecca, I must admit. When I had the chance to choose a home in this incredible city some 20 or more years ago, my husband and I spent weeks visiting various homes around the city, including many that we liked very much. But something which struck us every time we came away was just how little light and air circulates in many of the internal streets of Venice.
And it was precisely this which in the end tipped the balance in favour of the island of Giudecca - the wider streets, open squares, low buildings and open views across the lagoon and the fascinating canal of Giudecca. But one of the major factors in deciding us to move here was the very close proxìmity of Giudecca to all that we needed........ a 2-minute ferry across to the centre of town; a 10-minute ferry to St.Mark's Square; a 15-minute ferry to the gigantic parking lot of Tronchetto; a 20-minute ferry to the bus terminal of Piazzale Roma, and then, right here on our doorstep, a lovely selection of restaurants, bars, patisserie, plus the essential supermarkets, Post Office, chemists, doctors' surgeries, dentists and banks. Because what most people tend to ignore (and it isn't their fault........they just don't know) is that the public transport in Venice runs only through the centre of the city (Grand Canal) and all around it (Giudecca Canal and the North of the city), so we are actually better served here for transport than most of the people who purport to live in the "centre" of the city!! Ask them what it means to get back home after a holiday! Ask them if a taxi can draw up near their front door! How many bridges they have to cross with their supermarket shop.........or more precisely......have they even got a supermarket near home!!!
So, rightly or wrongly, I tend to take it very personally when I hear people say......"but Giudecca is an island", and have to be very careful not to gnash my teeth and take them by the hand and SHOW them just how close we are!
So I have tried to do the next best thing with this video clip, by showing what a short distance it actually is from the Grand Canal (the main "artery" of the city) across to Giudecca. The clip begins just as we turn from the Grand Canal into a small canal that then comes out directly in front of Giudecca and the Giudecca Canal which you can see just in the distance on the other side of the last bridge in the clip.
